I agree with David if the linkage is what I think it is. I was told it was the shifting rod. Anyway, i had the same trouble. I had thought it was internal at the time. Just follow the pedal down and under the engine is a rod that connects the pedal to the arm coming out of the gear box, it will probobly be bent. One day while having the trouble it just snapped on me. Only an $8 part that you can attach in about 30 seconds.
